well i had the privilege of livin in New Orleans when i was a kid. missed out on a year of school but i tell you it was most definitely worth it. lol well if you thought singapore was diverse you’re in for a surprise. dont listen to all that media hype. sure there are some dangerous places. but i assure you its plenty safe in good neighbourhoods. lol you wont find trouble unless you go looking for it. like all played out stereotypes; americans have been portrayed extensively out of character. there not all stupid or ignorant. they’re actually nice if you stay humble and respect tradition. lol you’d become hugely unpopular if you dissed nascar nfl major leagues nba and most importantly thanksgiving, which americans really take pride of.i think its safe to say that if your smart, livin in america can be a dream come true. it is after all the land of opportunity. well if your not then you’re better off here.

its a really respected position :) besides i havent done my va and i'm not sure i'll get a chance to do it since i'm overseas atm. but i've come to grips with it. haha like gedanken said, the experience is the most valuable thing you'll get out of the army. the berets are just headdresses at the end of the day. its the person wearing it that matters. lol and in my opinion that person could be just about anyone with the right attitude. besides on a global scale we arent recognised as a major fighting force. we're more of a deterrence force, we provide aid in crisis and fight only to protect or prevent, but we will under no circumstances declare wars. haha i think we lack the man and fire power to do so. it is after all a nuclear age. but i dont have and doubts that we can hold our grounds if ever in a million years someone does decide that we are a threat. i'd say you could make your mark in our army as a humanitarian. although people dont think much of them i say they're pretty much the most respectable human beings to walk the earth. serving others before being served. thats the truly the mark of a great man. :D

i dont see a reason for something like that to happen. lol but i’m pretty sure we’ve got the support of commonwealth nations like britain and india and the newcomers, the us of a. not sure about china though we seem to be getting on their bad side, lol after all we do give prcs alot of stig. haha but i still think we’re pretty safe for now.

yea i’m in the middle of exams myself, i rekon a break is well deserved. i wish i could get at least 2 months off before i get enlisted. you know just so i can catch up with friends, chill and into the right mindset before i get in.

true but still i wouldnt say we’re up there in the asia pacific region. that honour goes to south korea whom many underestimate. they’ve got soldiers who fight with great conviction-’freedom’ is their goal. that is reason enough to respect them. well that and the youtube videos of their endless skillset. haha i have an friend who’s a regular in the australian army. a combat veteran, served in iraq and afganistan and he wasnt too impressed when i said i was going to enlist next year. apparently there isnt much ‘honour’ per say in joining our ‘small army’. i quote ,’ well maybe in south asia you’re the big guns but on a global scale nobodies heard of singapore winning any battles, your record’s clean as. because you’re not a combat proven, mate do your self some justice and join the australian forces, they’re known for being tough as nails, or if you’re really into making a difference, try the SASR they’re the best regiment in australia; highly respected its an army within itself. and maybe even greatly romanticised compared to our counterparts the british SAS’.

well that sorta confused and angered me at first, but theres some truth to it even within the arrogance. we are truely an island nation, 24km by 24 km and within this space we have close to 5 million residents and 300000 reserve soldiers. it really struck me how small we are compared to our neighbouring countries. lol i drive 18 km to go to my gym. when i make a round trip it struck me that i have crossed the width of singapore. its great that people know we exist on the map. but will our armed forces ever be recognised on a global scale as competent fighting force whom have comparable combat skills to that of their allies. and perhaps the equipment to match? haha in todays modern world i’d give our army 8/10 for attitude. i’ve seen how my friends have become more patriotic just because they experience and understand what our ancestors fought for. its truely a great sight, but in todays world i think we just dont have the resources to be a global powerhouse. i really hope we can change that image, of being a country thats vunerable just due to the lack of space and resources, to a more modern and secure country whom if needed will provide assistance towards just causes like freedom. haha i truely salute the soldier sacrifices through whom we’ve gotten our own freedom, i still think its fucked up that we dont see the world as it is today, civil/border wars in india, china, africa. we really do take our freedom for granted

haha i did not mean to offend anyone in the forum. dont get me wrong, my respect for our old school troopers is boundless. the men back then were tough as nails. lol i still remember my dad telling me how he had to eat a cobra and other wild animals/plants in the jungle as part of his survival training, carry tin cans for food, work with rubbish equipment yet he always said that nobody ever complained. today when he brings colleagues home for dinner and talks about his time in the army, they all have just that much more respect for him. haha they’re all mostly military men from south africa, britain and the states. and they all sorta relate to it cos they know how tough you had to be to survive army life back then. you dont see that sorta thing happening today. haaha they all think us youngins have got it easy. thats why in a way i think we’ve lost some of that ‘respect’ if you will.

haaha yea i guess you’re right, fuck him he’s only a combat soldier, and for a riflemen i dont think he can say much about us after all he was pretty ignorant, lol he thought we were part of china or something. but i’m still not in a postion to say anything or judge. but its hard to defend something when it isnt given recognition. i for one would be proud to see the day singaporeans appear on tv all over the world. you know just to give them some recognition. these selfless men did after all build clinics and schools provided relief where it was needed, even in new orleans! haha i’ve yet to see that pop up on aussie tv. but hey i guess i’ll keep defending it for what it is not what it can be .
